SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE WEEK!The cricketers of South Africa, who managed to salvage the first test against England and get a draw have gone one better in the 2nd Test at Headingley by winning it by 10 wickets. After putting England in to bat, the much hyped Protea bowling attack finally found their mark by whittling England out for 203 in their first innings. Dale Steyn & Morne Morkel were the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets each. Then it was the turn of the batsman who were 143/4 after a steady start. Then they turned it up a notch with Ashwell Prince and AB de Villiers both hitting centuries whilst helping themselves to a record 5th wicket partnership by South Africa against England of 212. Prince got a test best score but fell one short of 150, scoring 149. AB de Villiers spent a long time in the nervous ninties. He was stuck on 99 for no less than 20 minutes before getting to 100. He went on to score a brilliant knock of 174 to get South Africa to 522 all out in their 1st innings. The bowling attack ripped through England again leaving them 140/5 at one point. Steyn & Morkel both picked up 3 wickets in the innings with Ntini & Kallis 2 each but a late flurry of 67 not out from Stuart Broad meant the Proteas had to bat again needing just 9 for victory. It took Smith and McKenzie just 7 balls to wrap up a 10 wicket win as they now lead the series 1-0 with 2 to play. A win next week in Edgbaston means that the Proteas will win a test series in England for the first time since 1965.
MIKE'S LETTER FROM SOUTH AFRICAMY MEMORIES OF MEETING NELSON MANDELA. In 1996 while I was still in the corporate world with Colgate Palmolive, my Marketing team organised the "Miracles for Kids" programme which raised nearly three million rand for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. The first of my three meetings with (then) President Mandela was at the NMCF offices in Corlett Drive Johannesburg. As mentioned in previous weeks, President Mandela was extremely gracious to our team coming across as a lovable grandfatherly figure. He was delighted to learn that we were from the makers of Colgate toothpaste. "I used Colgate toothpaste all of the time that I was on Robben Island, and still do" he told us enthusiastically. We made suitable noises of approval but all agreed afterwards that having seen the state of his teeth we wouldn't advertise the fact! More next time.
Low cost telephone call service to South AfricaWe recommend 0844 439 1414 for SA landlines and some SA mobiles (3p per minute) and 0871 999 1717 for other SA mobiles (10p per minute). Follow the instructions and connection is easy and very fast and the call quality is generally good. There are cheaper ones around but these give the best service and quality by far.
