SOUTH AFRICAN SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE WEEK!The South African cricket team started their tour of India well, with a crushing innings and 6 run victory in the first test in Nagpur. Having batted first, the Proteas were in trouble at 6/2 following the dismissal of the operning pair Ashwell Prince and Graeme Smith. However a fantastic 3rd wicket partnership of 340 from Hashim Amls and Jacques Kallis put South Africa firmly in control. Kallis, still searching for his first ever double hundred was sadly dismissed for 176. Amla however powered on to an eventual test best score of 253 not out. Good backup of 53 from AB de Villiers and 39 from Mark Boucher meant South Africa declared on 558/6. Then it was the turn of the bowling attack led by the awesome Dale Steyn who rippsed through the Indian batting lineup taking a test best 7/51 to whittle India out for just 233. After the follow on South Africa went to work again, taking two wickets on the third day before returning on the fourth day to finish the job despite stiff resistance from the Indian batting lineup including a 46th test century for Sachin Tendulkar. SA bowled India out again for 319 including 3 wickets for Paul Harris and Dale Steyn who achieved an ten wicket match with match figures of 10/108. South Africa now move onto the second and final test in Kolkata looking to secure a famous series win and return to the top of the test match rankings.
The new SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE has been launched in the UK. The inaugural Executive Committee has been elected and at its first meeting at the Anglo American offices in London earlier this year elected our own Mike Miller as Deputy President and Acting President during the formative process. The current South African High Commissioner in the UK, Dr Lindiwe Mabuza is the first Honorary President of the organisation and Prince Velekaya Shange of the Zulu Royal Household is the first Life Vice President. Mike Miller is also one of two Executive Directors of the new Chamber which will take offices temporarily on the first floor of SAPRO House, Maidenhead. Stephen Bourne is the other Executive Director and Company Secretary of the new Chamber. SARWA has become a sub-committee of the new Chamber under the chairmanship of Kevin Gallagher. David Smuts is chairing the Membership sub-committee, James Durrant the Media, Publicity and Marketing sub-committee and Craig Varney the Finance sub-committee. Meetings of the Executive and sub-committees have already been held at the South African High Commission in Trafalgar Square as well as the Anglo American and Maitland offices in London. The formal launch of the new Chamber is scheduled for October in both the UK and SA. For further details contact Mike Miller.
The SARWA website www.sarwa.co.uk lists all members and their details so that customers can find them easily. It shows details of all SARWA members who own RETAIL STORES, ONLINE STORES, WHOLESALERS, PUBS and RESTAURANTS, and SERVICES in the UK.
SARWA and the new Chamber of Commerce aims to increase the quality and lower the cost of the South African shopping experience in the UK. Contact Mike at saproint@compuserve.com for further details.
MIKE'S LETTER FROM SOUTH AFRICAMY MEMORIES OF MEETING NELSON MANDELA. In 1996 while I was still in the corporate world with Colgate Palmolive, my Marketing team organised the "Miracles for Kids" programme which raised nearly three million rand for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. The first of my three meetings with (then) President Mandela was at the NMCF offices in Corlett Drive Johannesburg. As mentioned in previous weeks, President Mandela was extremely gracious to our team coming across as a lovable grandfatherly figure. He was delighted to learn that we were from the makers of Colgate toothpaste. "I used Colgate toothpaste all of the time that I was on Robben Island, and still do" he told us enthusiastically. We made suitable noises of approval but all agreed afterwards that having seen the state of his teeth we wouldn't advertise the fact! More next time.
